My first experience back country skiing and i wasnt disappointed with Great Northern Powder Guides. the snow as great, fresh tracks all day, and the staff were as happy to be out there as we were. It was the little things that impressed me – i was skiing injured and just having the staff take our gear at the end of each run and pack the cat made a big difference for me. The lunch was awesome in their backcountry semi-permanent tent, and to top it off a beer on the way down the mountain – perfect way to finish the day. I also bought the photos from the day and i had the edited copies from abby in 24 hours. Big thanks to Clay, our lead guide, and the rest of the team
    until next time 🙂

My first day on a Snowcat adventure started with a bit of trepidation. I used to ski the woods back in Vermont when a young man, but now almost sixty I have been riding the groomed for twenty years. I thought it would be tricky skiing in the woods with variable spring conditions. Sure enough our first runs were on breakable (some not at all!) crust, as the sun had gotten to fresh snow, then it had frozen over night. Diving down through pine trees was tricky.

This is where the Powder Hounds of Great Northern came to the rescue. Evan our lead guide quickly figured out by knowledge of the mountains weather patterns where the protected stashes of powder were. A hound will find what it needs. We enjoyed many runs of boot top fluff. After awhile I got used to the steep and the dancing through the trees was exciting. The Cat rides were fun, enlivened by a great group from Freeride Media. I am thrilled to have had the adventure and at Whitefish today I got off the groomed and hit the tree runs off the T-bar! Thanks to all at GNPC, I plan to be back.

In the 24 years I have skied the best day I have ever had was with Great Northern Powder Guides. This was my first time back country or cat Skiing and I loved every minute of it. From the time we walked in the door to the last run the service was excellent! Fresh tracks every run with fun and easy going guides that were always looking out for our safety as well as getting us the best lines possible! We also had a photographer taking amazing pictures of us in awesome knee high powder! If you are looking for an amazing skiing experience definitely look up Great Northern Powder Guides for an awesome time. This was worth every penny!!

When I came to Great Northern Powder Guides I did not really know what to expect. It was my first time Cat skiing and I knew that it would be different from skiing at resorts but I was blown away with how different it was. Every single turn on every single run was a fresh track in DEEEP powder. The guides were knowledgable, fun, and always kept the conversation going inside the cat. If you are going out to Whitefish to ski the Big Mountain, definitely take at least one day to the GNPG, it will be worth it.

After several days of researching and calling B.C.-based Cat Skiing companies, I stumbled upon GNPG. After speaking with Ky for about an hour one night in October, I emailed my friends and five of us decided to book (traveling from Boston/NYC). We didn’t know what to expect since none of us had ever been Cat Skiing before, but we had fairly high expectations. We stayed at the house that is available to rent and booked 3 days of Cat Skiing – 2 in Steep & Deep (S&D) and 1 in Powder Cat. Our 4th day we skied at Whitefish mtn resort. We had an awesome trip and look forward to going back. The S&D terrain was challenging and the powder was DEEP. We were always skiing new lines and fresh snow. The guides were well-trained, strong skiers and really cool. It is a professionally run company, with an expert staff, and great terrain. The entire time I felt like we were part of the family. I think GNPG has the potential to get better every year.

If you can stay at the house, do it. If you are coming for a few days book as many S&D days as possible. The Powder Cat was great for our 3rd day, but next year I want to do all S&D. I highly recommend GNPG.

We spent three days with the crew of Great Northern Powder Guides in February 2014. This was a fantastic trip. The guides were excellent in getting us into fresh tracks on just about every run. The Cat was spacious and comfortable. Conditions were unreal, with deep powder, some open terrain and tree skiing. The guides accommodated all our needs, were friendly and offered overall excellent service. Our host, Ky, was a delight to work with. We stayed at the their “cabin” which was offered as part of out trip. This was a beautiful cabin with plenty of room for 14 guests. The amenities were first class, from the kitchen to the hot tub and everything in between! Overall I would give this trip a 10/10 and would highly recommend their services. I will for sure go back.!!

I grew up in Steamboat Springs and have skied the last 41 years.
Also lived and skied the Cascades extensively. Similar with Maine and Vermont.

I have had many awesome POW runs over the years … a few as good as the runs that I had with GNPG.

But I have never had them every run, run after run, for three days straight ! Every run was first tracks for the group with plenty for everyone. It just kept snowing and snowing, no bottom !

An epic father-son trip with my 12 yr old who now wants to move to the FV.

If you want Extreme, book your own cat with a group of ski buddies. The terrain will be limited by the least capable skier in the group, which would be typical for any cat skiing.

    See you next year !

Nine of us convened at GNPG in the third week of February 2014 for what will go down as some of the best team riding I have ever done. We got blessed with 3′ of powder and two bluebird days – literally as good as it gets. Everyone at GNPG was incredibly welcoming and the guides were all excellent skiers, funny and super personable. Honestly the staff makes this place great. The terrain is fantastic and the snow is top notch and the views are breathtaking. Stay at their house if you can and make sure to meet Jake’s bobcat. I wouldn’t say you have to be in excellent shape to make the most of this place but I would say that you should be advanced and able to thread the needle. I definitely plan to make it back to Whitefish and cat trip again with this outfit as it is the quintessential pay-to-play with just your friends snow experience.

I’ve been to a few different cat operations and they have all been different. I would say these guys strength is the bang for the buck. The terrain was great and the guides were very accomodating. The photographer that tagged along with us woud’ve cost 4 times as much at other operations. The overall feeling I got was that they try hard and will only get better.
